Description
This Sydney Water project was a design-build with five years of operations. The existing 57 ML/d primary plant was upgraded with BNR secondary treatment, tertiary filters and UV disinfection to achieve high effluent quality. Several kilometres of the outfall system was replaced with steel pipeline to improve effluent discharge, abd the project also included modications to sludge processing, construction of a biosolids storage facility and a number of odour control measures. Commissioning of the upgraded plant was a significant contributor to improving water quality at nearby beaches. The principal contractor was Civil & Civic (now BLL), assisted by Australian Water Services (now Degremont) for operations and the Cronulla Wastewater Group (CH2MHILL & SKM) for engineering and design.
Role
Nick Read was the CWG Design Manager for the project from the commencement of the project through to completion of the commissioning and process proving period, running a design team comprising engineers from the two design firms and liaising with the principal contractor, subcontractors including operations, specialist reports and Sydney Water stakeholders. Paul Gaughan led the original bid design and also provided specialist technical input during the delivery phase.
