Description

Project Manukau was a design-build project involving the upgrade of Auckland’s main sewage treatment plant to replace old trickling filters and oxidation ponds with a 1200 ML/d state of the art tertiary BNR facility. This included interstage pumping, innovative ‘donut’ style reactor/clarifiers, tertiary filters and one of the largest UV disinfection facilities in the world. On completion of the new facilities, over 500 ha of the old oxidation ponds were dredged, breached and reutrned to Manukau Harbour. The project also involved multi-stage sludge thickening, dewatering, digestion and Class A alkaline stabilisation, plus comprehensive odour control systems. Numerous environmental enhancement features were implemented including foreshore restoration and the development of a bird habitat in the restored part of the harbour. The client, Watercare Services, let the design build project to the Manukau Water Services consortium comprising Fletcher Construction, Bovis Lend Lease, CH2M-Beca and Australian Water Services.

Role

Both Paul Gaughan and Nick Read were heavily involved with the project at various times – Paul was the Engineering Manager from the start of the job until completion of the detailed design, with Nick providing specialist input at this stage. As construction and commissioning neared completion, Nick assumed the role of Engineering Manager, responsible for the final sludge processing upgrades and the extended overall performance testing programme leading to contract completion and handover.
